HUBERT HURKACZ
24-year-old Hubert Hurkacz won his first ATP 1000 title earlier this year at the Miami Open and after a lengthy spell of poor form followed he reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in a stunning run that saw him beat Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer along the way. The Pole has since played fairly well at the Cincinnati and Canadian Open without making a significant impact on either but he should be a dark horse for another deep run at this Grand Slam if he gets a kind enough early draw.
EGOR GERASIMOV
28-year-old Egor Gerasimov reached a career-high 65th
in the ATP world rankings last season but he has struggled for consistent performances this year and brings a 12-16 record to the US Open. The Belarussian has beaten just one player inside the top 30 this season but on his day he cane a tough man to beat from the back of the court with surprising amounts of variation when he is confident enough to come to the net. Gerasimov has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
10th seed Hubert Hurkacz should be considered a contender for the quarter-finals at least here in Flushing Meadows if he can gather himself up for another exhausting campaign. The 24-year-old is enjoying the best season of his young career with a first Masters title in Miami and an announcement to the world at Wimbledon in July when he beat Roger Federer in straight sets. However, he has so far struggled to string good campaigns together and Egor Gerasimov is no pushover. What will hurt Gerasimov here, though, is that Hurkacz essentially possesses a much better version of his own game. The brave call is for Hurkacz to win in straight sets here but his post-Wimbledon form suggests taking him as outright is the wiser move.
