The world number 150, Henri Laaksonen, comes into this event off the back of an impressive personal showing at this year’s French Open. The Swiss-Finnish 29 year-old, who turned pro in 2009, reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time ever with a victory over Roberto Batista Agut in June. It was his first and only win against a player ranked in the top ten in the world at the time. He snuck into this event via qualification.
JOHN MILLMAN
John Millman’s career best performance at a Grand Slam came at the US Open in 2018 when he reached the quarter-finals. He retains his world ranking of 43 and will be confident of going past the first round this time. Of his last four appearances at Flushing Meadows, only once has he not gone past the first match.
THE PREDICTION
These two have only ever faced off in the round of 16 of the Caloundra Challenger in Australia in 2012. This time around there is a little more prestige. Millman won that match and will come into this as the relatively strong favourite as well; as his world ranking should suggest. It might not be an overwhelmingly dominant display from the Australian so Laaksonen could force him to drop a set but it should still end up with John Millman coming out on top.
