HEATHER WATSON
29-year-old Heather Watson was very competitive in a straight-sets defeat to eventual Cincinnati Open champion Ash Barty two weeks ago but a first round loss in Chicago this week, via a retirement, is worrying prep for the US Open. The British number two won her fourth WTA title at the Acapulco Open last season before the covid-19 pandemic suspended what was promising to be a great season and she failed to win another match on tour all year. Watson has never made it past the first round at the US Open but she has four third round finishes at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon combined.
KAjA JUVAN
20-year-old Kaja Juvan is tipped for big things and the Slovenian beat Belinda Bencic in the first round of Wimbledon last month for her best result of the year. She went on to reach the third round at SW19 and also at the Australian Open earlier this season for her best showings at a major so far and she made the second round on debut here last year.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough call with Heather Watson pulling out of her first round match at the Chicago Women’s Open last Monday. Before that, the 29-year-old had been impressive at the Cincinnati Open even in defeat to world number one Ash Barty and earlier on in the summer where she almost beat Iga Swiatek at the Eastbourne International. Kaja Juvan looked impressive at Wimbledon before a third round defeat to Coco Gauff but since then the youngster has struggled for wins. Take Watson to win at least a set here as the likelier winner in a match that looks like it needs a decider.
