At the age of just 19 years-old, Hailey Baptiste’s second round appearance at her second ever Grand Slam at the French Open in 2021 will be viewed with excitement for her future. She qualified for this year’s tournament as a wild card entry. She reached the WTA 250 Charleston Open doubles final alongside Caty McNally and they won but she is yet to make an impact in the singles events, yet. She is currently ranked 181st in the world as of August 2021.
SHUAI ZHANG
The 32 year-old from Tianjin comes into this tournament ranked 49th in the world which is a drop from her career high of 23rd in November 2016. Her best performance at the US Open is the third round which is an achievement she has reached on three occasions. Zhang has played in two Grand Slam quarter-finals but it is now four consecutive Grand Slam first round exits.
THE PREDICTION
Despite Baptiste having the home advantage, she isn’t exactly in sparkling form nor is she expected to challenge her opponent in this first round match. Zhang has had a streak of poor Grand Slam performances but that shouldn’t affect the outcome of this. The Chinese player is expected to win this fairly comfortably.
