GUIDO PELLA
31-year-old Guido Pella reached a career-high of 20th in the ATP world rankings after a stunning run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2019. The Argentine became something of a giant-killer with brilliant wins over Kevin Anderson and Milos Raonic before losing to Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets. He won a home tournament that year too at the Sao Paolo Open but that remains his only tour title after struggling with form, the pandemic suspension and then several injuries this season.
FILIP KRAJINOVIC
29-year-old Filip Krajinovic reached the final of the ATP 500 Hamburg Open back in July, stunning the pre-tournament favourite Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. Otherwise, it has been a fairly unremarkable season for the Serb and as an excellent clay specialist he is unlikely to go that deep at the US Open. Krajinovic has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam, although he came close to in a five-set third round loss to Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open this year.
THE PREDICTION
If you were scouring the first round for matches that look capable of going all the way, this first meeting between Guido Pella and Filip Krajinovic looks like one of them. Neither player is in their best shape coming into the US Open but Krajinovic’s recent win over Stefanos Tsitsipas is very impressive indeed, whilst Pella beat David Goffin and Fabio Fognini in straight sets last week at the Cincinnati Open before losing to eventual champion Alexander Zverev. The Argentine seems the slight favourite on most recent form but his fitness issue sin 2021 make his matches a good pick to avoid in an accumulator. Take both players to win a set here, with Pella the likelier of two capable winners.
