34-year-old Gael Monfils has endured a torrid season for the majority of 2021 but the Frenchman has recently improved drastically. Four of his total seven wins for the year have come in August with two wins each at the Canadian and Cincinnati Open and he will be all the more dangerous to draw now than he has been in recent Grand Slams. Monfils ha snot made it past the second round in each of his last four major tournaments but he has enjoyed the best of his Grand Slam success at Flushing Meadows with a semi-final and three additional quarter-finals reached here.
FEDERICO CORIA
29-year-old Federico Coria reached his first ATP final in July in a stunning Bastad Open campaign that saw him beat Cristian Garin and Marco Cecchinato on clay before defeat to Casper Ruud. The Argentine has an overall 4-5 record at Grand Slams so far with a third round exit at Roland-Garros last season his best showing.
THE PREDICTION
There are very welcome signs for tennis fans everywhere that Gael Monfils’ form might be returning after the 34-year-old claimed two wins at both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open this month. The Frenchman has not made it past the second round of a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2020 but he has been handed a kind opening draw against Federico Coria to at least reach the second. Coria has enjoyed some brief successes this year on the clay swing but the Argentine has spent much of the year on the Challenger circuit and the gulf in quality at Monfils’ best Slam should tell eventually. Take Monfils to win outright here, with four or five sets probably required.
