FEDERICO DELBONIS
30-year-old Federico Delbonis reached a career-high 33rd in the ATP world rankings back in 2016 but the Argentine played some of the best tennis of his career this summer. A 23-17 record for the season so far does not tell the whole story, with Delbonis coming close on several occasions with three semi-finals reached, two quarter-finals and a round of 16 finish at Roland-Garros. Delbonis has beaten five players inside the top 30 this year and, although he is at his very best on clay, he will be a tough match for anybody here.
DENIS SHAPOVALOV
22-year-old Denis Shapovalov burst into life at Wimbledon back in July to lose to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. The Canadian showed us once again what he can be capable of in his best form but has since also displayed the other side of his game with three straight losses to players outside the top 49 in the world. Shapovalov’s Grand Slam record had previously been suspect but it will be fascinating to see what he can produce at Flushing Meadows.
THE PREDICTION
Seventh seed Denis Shapovalov is riding a four-match losing streak into the US Open but he should be able to waken up his form again on the big stage after reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month. The 22-year-old is prone to a poor start at tournaments, though, which often sees him caught out over the shorter three-set format. Five sets gives the youngster enough time to find his rhythm, like his opening round five-set slog against Philipp Kohlschreiber at SW19. Federico Delbonis will be a really tough opening match as an unflappable professional and this first meeting between the two will be an interesting mix of two unorthodox tennis players. Shapovalov should coast through this on his best form but we have not seen that for over a month now. Therefore, take Shapovalov to win and both players to take a set here.
