THE LOWDOWN

FACUNDO BAGNIS

Facundo Bagnis has a very inconsistent record of qualifying for Grand Slam events. He made his US Open debut in 2014 but has only appeared at Flushing Meadows a further two times in that period since his debut. He is currently ranked at number 74 in the world rankings did achieve his best ATP finish in March 2021 as he finished runner-up to Cristian Garin in the Chile Open. That was his first final appearances on the ATP.

TARO DANIEL

Injury to and the withdrawal of Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia allowed Taro Daniel to take his place. The New York born, Florida resident is one of three Japanese entrants in the first round. He is currently ranked at 112 in the world and hasn’t made it past the first round of a Grand Slam event since he reached the second round at the Australian Open in January 2019. This is the 11th Grand Slam event since then.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these players will view their first round draw as a relatively nice one. Bagnis has more form to his game following that ATP final appearance in March but his underwhelming performances at Grand Slam events will give Daniel the confidence to end his long run of failing to reach the second round at an event. Taro Daniel will be the slight favourite given his general career and the fact he an ATP winner at the Istanbul Open in 2018 but a five-set match is likely.
