31-year-old Evgeny Donskoy qualified for the main draw of the US Open via three hard-fought qualifiers as the 30th seed. The Russian reached a career-high 65th in the ATP world rankings back in 2013 where he reached the third round at both the Australian Open and US Open, which remain his best finish at a Grand Slam. Donskoy’s last Grand Slam appearance was here last season, where he lost in straight sets.
FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
World number 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime made a stunning run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last month where he lost to eventual champion Matteo Berrettini in four sets. The Canadian suffered a few bad weeks after that breakthrough at a major tournament but he looked in good shape at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago where he avenged his defeat to Berrettini before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
12th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime has a fair amount to prove at the US Open after his first run to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon last month. The 21-year-old has finished runner-up at eight different ATP tournaments, including two this season in Melbourne and Stuttgart, and it will be sooner rather than later that the Canadian wins that first trophy. It is difficult to pick his best surface at this moment in time after such a strong grass swing but he should be targeting the last eight here and a kind early draw against Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy is a good start. Take Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets.
