25-year-old Elise Mertens won the sixth WTA title of her career earlier this year in Melbourne but her best success has come in Women’s Doubles, where she is the current holder of the Australian Open title with Aryna Sabalenka and Wimbledon title with Su-Wei Hsieh. The Belgian number one’s best Grand Slam result was reaching the 2018 Australian Open semi-final but she has made the quarter-finals here in her last two appearances.
REBECCA PETERSON
26-year-old Rebecca Peterson is often regarded as a player of ability higher than her current ranking around the 60s and she achieved a career-high 43rd back in 2019, when she won both of her WTA titles. The Swede reached the semi-finals of the Chicago Women’s Open before defeat to Elina Svitolina in three sets and that form looks promising indeed coming into her fifth US Open. Peterson’s best showing came here with a third round exit in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Elise Mertens is usually a fairly consistent performer to her ranking at Grand Slam tournaments and she has beaten Rebecca Peterson on both their previous meetings. Both wins came on US soil on hardcourts at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati in 2018 and New York last year, where it was moved due to covid-19 restrictions. The Belgian needs a big campaign in the Singles here to live up to her previous campaigns but she has been handed a tricky start. Take Mertens to win at least a set here as Peterson’s exploits in Chicago suggest she can make things interesting.
