ELENA RYBAKINA
22-year-old Elena Rybakina is within touching distance of her career-high WTA world ranking of 17th she achieved last season before the pandemic forced its suspension. The Kazakh has two WTA titles to her name so far with the Bucharest Open in 2019 and the Hobart International at the start of 2020. Rybakina’s best surface is hard but she will have her work cuit out in New York trying to emulate her best Grand Slam showing after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in June.
ALIAKSANDRA SASNOVICH
Aliaksandra Sasnovich has reached a couple of quarter-finals this season and she took a set off Angelique Kerber in the third round of Wimbledon before eventually losing to the German. The 27-year-old was the player to benefit from Serena Williams’ heart-breaking injury in the first round at SW19. Her best Grand Slam finish came there with a round of 16 exit in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
This and the Australian Open are certainly Grand Slam titles Elena Rybakina could win over the next decade with her best surface on hard courts and plenty of big wins behind her already. She has struggled for form since a gut-wrenching loss to Elina Svitolina in the Bronze Medal match at the Tokyo Olympic Games last month but she should be able to put that to one side here. A first meeting with Aliaksandra Sasnovich is likely to fall in two sets to Rybakina, who should simply be too powerful.
