DONNA VEKIC
25-year-old Donna Vekic has two WTA titles to her name won in Kuala Lumpur in 2014 and Nottingham in 2017 but she has lost in three finals since then. The Croat is a wildly inconsistent player capable of random surges of form and the occasional upset, like beating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets at the Tokyo Olympic Games last month. Her best Grand Slam finish came here in 2019, where she lost to Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals.
GARBINE MUGURUZA
Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza is always a threat at the major tournaments as something of a big-game player, though she has failed to get past the round of 16 at the US Open. The 2016 Roland-Garros and 2017 Wimbledon champion won her eighth ATP title earlier this year at the Dubai Open, which was her first trophy for two years. She finished runner-up to Sofia Kenin at the 2020 Australian Open, though, to show her ability on her favoured hardcourt surface.
THE PREDICTION
Muguruza was the most recent winner over Donna Vekic with a three-sets victory at the Madrid Masters back in 2018 but the pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with Vekic winning their first meeting on hard in 2014. Vekic has shown recent flashes of form but nothing concrete enough to suggest she can easily provide an upset here, though Muguruza is also well off her best ability coming into a Grand Slam she has struggled the most with. Take the Spaniard to win at least a set here as the likelier of two capable winners.
