27-year-old Danielle Collins is not far from her career-high WTA world ranking of 23rd as she enters the US Open as a seeded player for the first time. The American is in the form of her life having won her first two WTA titles back-to-back recently, taking the Palermo Open title before winning the Silicon Valley Classic on US soil. Her best campaign remains a stunning run to the 2019 Australian Open semi-finals but she will be determined to better her best US Open result so far of a second-round exit later that year.

Former world number six Carla Suarez Navarro has reached seven Grand Slam quarter-finals: two here at the US Open, two at Roland-Garros and three at the Australian Open. Her most recent came here in 2018 but since then the Spaniard had initially struggled for form and retired from the sport before being diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. In April of this year she announced her cancer was in complete remission and that she would return to the tour for one more season.
THE PREDICTION
This will be Carla Suarez Navarro’s last appearance at the US Open, or any Grand Slam, as she prepares to retire at the end of the season. The popular Spaniard recovered from cancer earlier this season and returned to the tour to finish it on her terms and she will be well-supported here by all onlookers. At the other side of the court, Danielle Collins is in the form of her career and if she makes it through this tough opening match she could be a real threat to the latter stages of the US Open. Suarez Navarro beat Ons Jabeur recently at the Tokyo Olympic Games and took a set off Karolina Pliskova, Ash Barty and Sloane Stephens in her three defeats this season. This is clearly not a gimme for the 26th seed Collins, who could struggle with the occasion. Take Suarez Navarro to win at least a set here. She will fight as hard as she can for one more Grand Slam match win.
