DALMA GALFI
The 23 year-old Hungarian Dalma Galfi is currently ranked 176th in the world as of July 2021; down from her career high of 136th in June 2017. Galfi is still at the start of her career and this is set to be her first Grand Slam finals appearance. She reached the tournament via the competitive qualification tournament in which she had impressive back-to-back straight set victories against Despina Papamichail and Monica Niculescu.
PETRA MARTIC
Petra Martic has had some strong performances since 2017 in each Grand Slam. A quarter-final at the French Open in 2019 is supported in her record by fourth round appearances in each of the other three major events. She reached the final 16 in back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020 at the US Open. She has had a difficult 2021, though, with the Croatian having won just one match at a Grand Slam and that came in the first round at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
That victory on grass is unlikely to be form replicated at Flushing Meadows over the next couple of weeks. Martic is in poor form and her opponent has adapted well to the conditions as shown in her impressive qualification for the tournament. Despite that, Martic will come into this as the slight favourite due to her experience. It shouldn’t be a walkover, though.
