CRISTIAN GARIN
25-year-old Cristian Garin has suffered a real blip in form over the last few weeks on tour, losing four of his last six matches and each of his last three. The Chilean is at his best on the clay with all five of his ATP titles coming on the surface, including this season’s Santiago Open, but he will be a tough draw for anybody here. Garin has reached the round of 16 at his last two Grand Slams, losing to world number two Daniil Medvedev at Roland-Garros and then world number one Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon this season.
NORBERT GOMBOS
Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos reached a career-high of 80th in the ATP world rankings back in 2017 but he enters the US Open in 114th place here. The 31-year-old has reached four quarter-finals in clay tournaments this season in which he plies the vast majority of his trade and it is no surprise to find his best Grand Slam finish was at Roland-Garros where he made the third round last season.
THE PREDICTION
This is not really Cristian Garin’s half of the season but the Chilean should have more than enough to beat Norbert Gombos on Monday. It is a surprise to find the two clay specialists have not faced each other before but neither player arrives with much form behind them and this is match is unlikely to get many fans off their seats. Since his loss to Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month Garin has stuttered a fair amount but he should win outright here, and probably in three, to reach the second round.
