29-year-old Camila Giorgi’s excellent summer form looked like it might not be rewarded when she lost in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympic Games but the Italian surged to an mightily impressive victory at the Canadian Open. A first Masters title is well-deserved after beating the likes of Elise Mertens, Petra Kvitova, Coco Gauff and Karolina Pliskova in a hugely difficult draw and she is not far now from a career-high 26th in the WTA world rankings achieved back in 2018. Giorgi’s best Grand Slam showing came that year with a quarter-final exit at Wimbledon.
SIMONA HALEP
Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has struggled with a series of injuries in 2021 that puts her US Open campaign in jeopardy. The 29-year-old was forced to retire from her most recent comeback at the Cincinnati Open with a small adductor problem and, if she makes the first round in Flushing Meadows, she will be of concern throughout the fortnight. Halep won Roland-Garros in 2018 and then emphatically beat Serena Williams in one of the most compete performances in modern times at Wimbledon in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
It is surprising to find that Giorgi and Halep have only met each other once before but the Romanian won the encounter in straight sets at the Miami Open back in 2015. If Simona Halep is fit enough to play to her best ability it will be a small miracle but this should be a thrilling first round match regardless. In their current forms, Camila Giorgi has to be fancied to come through in what could end up her best Grand Slam campaign but Halep is one of the best fighters out there.
