CAMERON NORRIE
25-year-old Cam Norrie won his first ATP title at the Los Cabos Open back in July to cap off a stellar season so far in which the Brit had reached three previous finals. The unorthodox left-hander has been a thorn in the side of players outside the top 10 all year long and after a period of uncertainty following finally winning a title he should be in great shape to upset a few at the US Open. Norrie has beaten 10 players inside the top 30 this season and reached a career-high 29th in the ATP world rankings in July.
CARLOS ALCARAZ
18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a strong campaign at the Winston-Salem Open this week before defeat in the semi-finals to Mikael Ymer. The teenager is only moving one way up the ATP world rankings with a brilliant 18-12 record so far in 2021 and he achieved his career-high 54th after winning a first ATP title at the Umag Open earlier this month. Alcaraz reached the third round of Roland-Garros on his debut back in June and he made the second round at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon for a 100% record on debut appearances..
THE PREDICTION
This should be a really close-fought first meeting between Cam Norrie and Carlos Alcaraz with both players in the form of their respective careers so far. 26-year-old Norrie won his first ATP title at the Los Cabos Open last month and 18-year-old Alcaraz did the same a week later at the Umag Open on clay. Norrie’s early-season form was nothing short of incredible but since winning in Los Cabos he has struggled to apply the same intensity to his matches. He should be able to recalibrate well at the US Open on home-from-home soil after spending much of his career in the collegiate system, so take the 26th seed to win at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable winners.
