BARBORA KREJCIKOVA
25-year-old Barbora Krejcikova was a successful and accomplished Doubles player before this season but the Czech’s Singles form went into overdrive in the late Spring to see her win three WTA titles, including Roland-Garros. Krejcikova also won the Strasbourg Open on her favoured clay surface but her most recent trophy at the Prague Open came on hard. Since winning her first title in May she has lost just three times: twice to Ash Barty and once to eventual Gold Medallist at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
ASTRA SHARMA
25-year-old Astra Sharma put in the performance of her career to beat Ons Jabeur in three sets and win her first WTA title at the Charleston Open on clay back in April. The Aussie has also reached two other quarter-finals in what has been a fairly inconsistent but ultimately successful year. Her best Grand Slam showing came at Roland-Garros back in June where she reached the second round.
THE PREDICTION
Whilst Barbora Krejcikova’s best tennis is undoubtedly played on a clay court, the Roland-Garros champion has been simply outstanding across all surfaces this summer. Since the Italian Open in May, Krejcikova has either lost to the eventual champion or won the tournament herself: with titles in Strasbourg, Roland-Garros and Prague and defeats to Iga Swiatek in Rome and Ash Barty at both Wimbledon and Cincinnati. Astra Sharma’s season has been encouraging for the 25-year-old but this should prove a pretty big gulf in quality to see Krejcikova win in straight sets.
