ASHLEIGH BARTY
World number one Ash Barty is coming in hot to the US Open after winning the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago and Wimbledon back in July. The 25-year-old has won five WTA titles this season already, losing just seven times in 2021 with her three other titles won in Melbourne, Miami and Stuttgart. The two-time Grand Slam champion should be able to smash her previous best showing at the US Open, where she reached the round of 16 in 2018 and 2019.
VERA ZVONAREVA
36-year-old Vera Zvonareva reached a career-high 2nd
in the WTA world rankings back in 2010 and she won a total of 10 WTA titles, though her last came in 2011 in Doha. The Russian spends most of her time on the Doubles side of the sport these days where she recently made the round of 16 at Wimbledon alongside Laura Siegemund. Zvonareva is a former US Open finalist from 2010, where she also finished runner-up at Wimbledon, but this will be just her third appearance at Flushing Meadows since.
THE PREDICTION
There are few superlatives left to describe Ash Barty and what is proving to be her best season on tour. She leads the WTA world rankings by over 3000 points, meaning she is almost certain to end the year at world number one, and she looks basically unstoppable in her quest for a first US Open title this fortnight after winning her last two tournaments at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open. Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva should be fairly resigned to a quick and clean defeat here with her focus on the Doubles in New York. Take Barty to win and concede less than seven games in doing so.
