ANGELIQUE KERBER
33-year-old Angelique Kerber won her first WTA title for three years this summer at the Bad Homburg Open and took that sudden form straight into Wimbledon, where she lost in the semi-finals to Ash Barty. The German is a three-time Grand Slam champion having won the Australian Open and US Open in 2016 as well as Wimbledon in 2017, where she has enjoyed most of her major success. Kerber has 13 WTA titles overall and again lost to Barty in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open just two weeks ago.
DAYANA YASTREMSKA
21-year-old Dayana Yastremska has played just eight matches this season after a six month ban for testing positive for a banned substance in January. She made the semi-finals of the German open on her return to the tour but has since won just one more match for a 3-5 record coming into New York. There is little doubt the Ukrainian will be able to reach and surpass her current career-high WTA ranking of 21st that she achieved early last year but this Grand Slam may have come too soon for her to better her third round finish here in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Yastremska was the surprise winner in their only previous encounter, although Kerber was forced to retire from the match a set down to the Ukrainian at the Adelaide International last year. Kerber was in a difficult part of her career back then and until winning the Bad Homburg Open this summer from relative obscurity it seemed she would not be able to get back to the top of the sport again. Back-to-back semi-final defeats to world number one Ash Barty at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open suggests different. Take the German to win outright here in what is still a tough opening draw.
