World number 89 is on her way back to a career-high 64th in the WTA world rankings she reached two years ago as a teenager. Potapova reached the third round of the Australian Open this year for her best Grand Slam finish to date.

27-year-old Jessica Pegula recently returned to form after a difficult clay and grass season and she got straight back to business on her favoured hard surface by reaching the semi-finals of the Canadian Open. Pegula has beaten four players inside the top 30 in the world this month with three-set battles won over Anett Kontaveit, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Danielle Collins and Ons Jabeur. Pegula reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this season and she should be considered a dark horse for the final here if she gathers enough steam.
THE PREDICTION
Pegula and Potapova will meet for the first time on tour level here in the first round of the US Open but the American did beat Potapova recently in the Qatar Open qualifiers. However, 23rd seed Pegula should be considered a genuine and considerable threat to the top order at the US Open this fortnight with her innate ability to win a remarkable amount of matches in three sets.
