Alize Cornet put in a great campaign at the Chicago Women’s Open this week to finish runner-up to Elina Svitolina in the final on Saturday. She faces a tough, quick turnaround to be able to recalibrate for the US Open but she has already proven herself a threat at Grand Slams this season after ousting Bianca Andreescu in the first round of Wimbledon. The former world number 11 has six WTA titles to her name and she has reached the round of 16 at a Grand Slam on five previous occasions.
ONS JABEUR
26-year-old Ons Jabeur won her first WTA title earlier this summer at the Birmingham Classic on grass and went on to earn huge praise for her efforts at Wimbledon. The Tunisian star was a hit with returning fans at SW19, where she reached the quarter-finals before defeat to Aryna Sabelanka. A quarter-final at the Canadian Open and round of 16 loss at the Cincinnati Open in August suggest she has what it takes to go on another deep run here.
THE PREDICTION
31-year-old Alize Cornet is enjoying something of a renaissance this season as she plays with freedom and expression not seen for a while. The Frenchwoman is a fan of the clay but a solid competitor across all surfaces and she will be a tough opening draw for Ons Jabeur here after reaching the final of the Chicago Women’s Open this week. However, Jabeur’s recent victories over the likes of Bianca Andreescu, Anett Kontaveit and Iga Swiatek suggest she is a level above Cornet at this moment in time. The Tunisian beat Cornet in three sets at the Charleston Open earlier this year to lead their head-to-head 2-0, so take her to win outright here in what should be a fun match between two entertainers.
