Alex Molcan qualified for this event via the ever competitive US Open’s qualification tournament prior to the main tournament. Molcan had straight sets victories over Belgian Kimmer Coppejans and Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic before a final victory over Gastao Elias. This is Molcan’s debut Grand Slam tournament. Molcan did reach the final of the Belgrade Open in May 2021 but lost to Novak Djokovic.
CEM ILKEL
As with Molcan, Cem Ilkel also qualified for the US Open via the qualification tournament. In that qualification tournament, Ilkel came through an impressive three set victory over Fernando Verdasco. His qualification for this is his first ever Grand Slam finals appearance. He first entered the US Open qualifying tournament in 2017 but a general improvement in his game means he has had to wait five years before reaching a major.
THE PREDICTION
This is very evenly matched. As you’d expect, two players making their Grand Slam debuts after coming through the qualification tournament, there isn’t much separating the pair. Given how tight this match is expected to be, there should be a sharing of the sets and a result might just be about too close to call. Therefore, a solid bet for this one would be to go overs in terms of games played across potentially five sets.
