AJLA TOMLJANOVIC
Alja Tomljanovic comes into the tournament ranked 46th in the world as of August 2021. This is down from her career high of 39th in April 2019. The Croatian-born Australian reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this summer to achieve her career best at a Grand Slam tournament. Tomljanovic hasn’t reached a WTA final since February 2019, though. She hasn’t lost a first round tie at a Grand Slam this year.
KATIE VOLYNETS
The wild card entry of Katie Volynets allows the 19 year-old to compete at her second Grand Slam of the year following a first round exit at Wimbledon a couple of months ago. Volynet’ best performance at a Junior Grand Slam was a quarter-final appearance at the US Open Junior in 2017. She did win the ITF Bonita Springs tournament in May 2021.
THE PREDICTION
This looks like one of the more one-sided first round ties out of both the men’s and women’s section at this year’s US Open. As promising a future as Katie Volynets appears to be in for, she is coming up against an experienced player with a lot of quality in Ajla Tomljanovic. It is unlikely to be extremely competitive and Tomljanovic to win in straight sets is likely.
