THE PREDICTION
Since his defeat to Alexander Zverev in the Cincinnati Open final, his first Masters final, world number five Andrey Rublev has been occasionally fallible. Defeats to Frances Tiafoe at the US Open, Cam Norrie at the San Diego Open, Tommy Paul at Indian Wells and Adrian Mannarino at the Kremlin Cup last week should not be happening so regularly to a player of his quality and it is of some concern as the top seed faces Botic Van de Zandschulp here. 26-year-old Van de Zandschulp has enjoyed a breakthrough year on tour so far by reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open back in September. The Dutchman has played excellently so far to beat Yoshihito Nishioka and an out-of-sorts eighth seed Sebastian Korda, with this test against Rublev his toughest since losing to eventual US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. 24-year-old Rublev at his best would storm through this match in straight sets but take the Russian to battle to an outright victory on Friday. It would not be a huge surprise to see Van de Zandschulp take this all the way.
