World number 28 Cam Norrie continues to prove his doubters wrong with his brand of clever, awkward tennis that picks wholes in his opponents’ playstyles to cover for his own weaknesses. That saw the 26-year-old beat the world number five Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals for his second-highest ranked win of the season in a brilliant 2021 campaign that has seen him consistently beating players inside the top 20. This first meeting with world number 10 Casper Ruud will be a fascinating match as the Norwegian aims to prove himself a winner on more than just his favoured clay surface. San Diego’s second seed took out a resurgent Grigor Dimitrov in three sets on Saturday to back up strong wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Andy Murray.
There are more questions than answers ahead of this final but Norrie taking at least a set here would not be a huge surprise, despite Ruud remaining the favourite to win a fifth title this season. Norrie is playing well enough this week to win his second, and on his best surface. Take the Brit to earn at least a set.
