THE PREDICTION
Ostrava Open fourth seed Maria Sakkari has a point to prove here after losing to Emma Raducanu in straight sets in the semi-finals of a US Open that was realistically hers to lose at that stage. The Greek looked in ruthless form against Jelena Ostapenko to come through the round of 16 in straight sets and she should be considered one of the favourites for the title. However, world number 61 Tereza Martincova has just claimed the biggest win of her season in a tough-fought straight-sets victory over the sixth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. That performance did not exactly come from nowhere but beating the Roland-Garros runner-up in two tiebreaks throws the Czech into a new light.
Sakkari has won both previous meetings with Martincova, first in 2015 on clay and then last season at the Qatar Open on a hard court. Both matches came in three sets which is quite surprising considering their current rankings but that record, and the Czech’s impressive work so far in Ostrava, is enough to back Sakkari as the outright winner in a cautious abstain from straight-sets.
