THE PREDICTION
World number 42 Jil Teichmann is just two places off her career-high WTA ranking of 40th she achieved earlier this year in what could well be proving to be her best year on tour. The 24-year-old has won two WTA titles before in previous seasons but her run to a first Masters final at the Cincinnati Open, where she lost to world number one Ash Barty, is mightily impressive and she has been in fine form at the Ostrava Open too. Teichmann took out the sixth seed Angelique Kerber in straight sets on Tuesday and backed that up with a win over recent Slovenian Open runner-up Alison Riske in the round of 16. She faces the second seed next in world number 10 Petra Kvitova, who also needed three sets in the round of 16 to beat Anastasia Potapova. The Czech star has never won the Ostrava Open but she has previously won on home soil at the 2018 Prague Open.
This is a tough one to call, with recent form pointing towards Jil Teichmann as well as their head-to-head record after the Swiss got the better of Kvitova at the Dubai Open earlier this year. Kvitova did have to retire from that previous encounter in the second set but taking Teichmann to win at least a set here seems the wisest move between two very capable winners. Kvitova will be well backed by a partisan Czech crowd but Teichmann is a tough nut to crack right now.
