THE PREDICTION
This should be a well-contested battle between world number 30 Anett Kontaveit and number 11 Belinda Bencic. Both players are probably at their best on grass but plenty of those skills transfer over to hardcourts, with both recently successful on this surface. 24-year-old Bencic won a Gold and Silver medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games back in August, in Singles and Doubles, respectively, whilst 28-year-old Kontaveit played a superb campaign at the more recent Cleveland Championships to win the title there. Kontaveit is yet to drop a set at the Ostrava Open with two impressive results against Sorana Cirstea and ninth-seed Paula Badosa, whilst Bencic took out Sara Sorribes Tormo in similar fashion.
Kontaveit was the winner of their only previous meeting on tour, thrashing an out-of-sorts Bencic in straight sets at last season’s Australian Open to the tune of just one conceded game. This second meeting should be significantly more balanced considering both players’ recent exploits and a winner looks tough to pick in one of four excellent quarter-finals at the Ostrava Open. Bencic has not played a deciding set in 15 matches now, dating back to the Berlin Open final in June. It seems unorthodox but taking this match to see a total of two sets could be a good alternative to a result here. Otherwise, take the Swiss to win at least one as the likelier of two capable winners.
