THE PREDICTION
World number 36 Nikoloz Basilashvili is one of the more unpredictable players on tour and he can often need prodding into action. The 29-year-old lost the first set to love against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday but that brought him to life in a pretty impressive reversal to win the next two sets. His two ATP 250 titles this season on clay in Munich and hard in Qatar, via defeating Roger Federer, make him one of the favourites for tournaments at this level but he faces a similarly hard man to predict in Gael Monfils. One of tennis’ greatest showmen, 35-year-old Monfils has endured a torrid season up until recently, where the return of crowds has helped the former world number six back into a modicum of form. He beat fellow veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets on Thursday but this will be a tougher test against Basilashvili.
The home crowd in Metz should provide a partisan atmosphere that the Georgian has crumbled under in recent memory, at Wimbledon against Andy Murray for example, and Monfils knows how to utilise that atmosphere better than most. That and the fact that he was the winner against Basilashvili in their only previous meeting three years ago suggests Monfils can reach the semi-finals here.
