THE PREDICTION
World number 43 Kei Nishikori’s target of breaking the top 20 by the end of the season looks to be on course after the 31-year-old came back from a set down to win a tight contest with Karen Khachanov on Tuesday. He will start this second round match with world number six Alexander Zverev as the underdog but on recent form he looks hard done by there. 23-year-old Zverev has lost three of his last five matches on tour since winning the Mexican Open in Acapulco and was knocked out by Ilya Ivashka, then outside the top 100, last week at the Munich Open. Zverev is particularly unpredictable at present but Nishikori’s work-rate should be able to challenge the German throughout and if this match is about who relents first we should see Nishikori through. However, Zverev is a three-time Masters champion including the Madrid Masters in 2018, giving him plenty of motivation for a change in form. Take Nishikori to win at least a set here and leave an overall winner up to chance.
