World number 42 John Millman claimed a big scalp early-on in the Madrid Masters with a three-set victory over recent Miami Open champion Hubert Hurkacz. The Australian claimed his first title on tour last year in Kazakhstan on a hard court but he is always a competitive, tireless player on any surface. This first meeting with Dan Evans looks set to be a lengthy one between two exceptionally fit players who enjoy the battle. World number 26 Evans took out an in-form Jeremy Chardy in three sets on Monday in a high-quality match and without Men’s Doubles exploits this week to add court time to his legs the Brit will be a challenge for anybody. Millman’s defeat of Hurkacz was mightily impressive but it must be said that the Pole has not looked himself since winning the Miami Open and Evans’ performance against Chardy should be enough to win this match outright. This will probably go to three sets, though that would be a riskier addition.
