All eyes will be on world number four Dominic Thiem today as he attempts to hit the ground running at the Madrid Masters. The current US Open champion has long been the main threat to Rafael Nadal’s French Open dominance but the Austrian has struggled for fitness and, he admits, motivation in what has been a difficult period for all sports people. Having missed out a month of clay court tournaments, the 27-year-old has some catching up to do to be ready in time for Roland-Garros but a break could be exactly what he needs and Marcos Giron represents a fairly kind first match back. The American is a tireless baseline battler and that be really beneficial to Thiem’s need to get match practice into his legs. Giron is not to be underestimated, though, and is well capable of forcing a decider here if Thiem starts slow or loses focus halfway through. In their first meeting it should be Thiem coming through in straight sets here but a cautious Thiem to win outright is more advisable.
