THE PREDICTION
World number nine Diego Schwartzman was part of an incredible Barcelona Open quarter-final with Pablo Carreno Busta last time out, eventually losing out to the Spaniard in a match that could have gone either way. The Argentine has a clay-court title to his name already this season having won the Argentina Open and he is always one of the names mentioned for a deep run at events on this surface. He faces Aslan Karatsev for the second time this year after playing a part in the Russian’s miraculous run to the Australian Open semi-finals, with Karatsev beating Schwartzman in straight sets in the third round there. That should give 28-year-old Schwartzman all the motivation he needs here and he is the stronger player on this surface but there is something about the current belief of Karatsev that makes this a dodgy match to side with. The world number 27 was excellent without reaching his peak in beating Ugo Humbert on Monday here and he recently beat Novak Djokovic at the Serbia Open in emphatic style. Schwartzman’s self-belief is comparatively low and Karatsev looks set to exploit that. Leave this match out if an accumulator but on current form Aslan Karatsev should have enough to come through this tough test.
