World number 10 Matteo Berrettini was assured throughout his first match in Madrid and had to be to beat fellow Italian Fabio Fognini on Tuesday, needing just two sets to oust the world number 28. The 24-year-old won the Serbia Open last week with another confident display against Aslan Karatsev and that level looks a little high for in-form Federico Delbonis to challenge here. The Argentine beat Estoril Open champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Wednesday to back-up an excellent win over Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round and his performances so far warrant just an outright pick for Berrettini here rather than a straight-sets option. The Italian should be winning this in two, though.
