THE PREDICTION
World number Dominic Thiem looked confident throughout a quick straight-sets victory over Marcos Giron and blew away any questions that he might be rusty on his favoured surface. The 27-year-old current US Open champion took a break from the tour citing mental and physical fatigue recently but returned on Tuesday with aplomb and that should concern every single player in the draw here. 22-year-old Alex de Minaur is a fan favourite here as an honorary Spaniard having trained in Spain for much of his young life but the Aussie trails in a convincing 3-0 head-to-head record with Thiem. De Minaur was in control against Lloyd Harris on Tuesday before the South African was forced to retire, and he often starts strongly, but the likelihood is that Thiem’s time-off was the right course of action and he can come through to the quarter-finals in two.
