World number 26 continued his excellent clay-court form into the round of 16 of the Madrid Masters with a confident comeback performance against a superb John Millman on Wednesday. The 30-year-old has a 12-7 record for 2021 but has only lost one match in straight sets, to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open, with many of his defeats close-run results indeed. Evans will face world number six Alexander Zverev for the second time having beaten the German when Zverev was a teenager at the 2016 US Open but both players are vastly different individuals five years on. 24-year-old Zverev is a former champion here in Madrid and played like one in the second round, beating in-form Kei Nishikori in straight sets. This result looks a tough pick. Evans is the player in better overall form right now but this match will likely be decided on Zverev’s racket. Take Evans to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
