27-year-old Aslan Karatsev started sluggishly against an initially superb Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday morning but the Russian came back strongly to win in three. The world number 27 has shown that his suddenly excellent game transfers well from hard courts to clay courts and beating a top 10 clay player in Schwartzman at a Masters event is a massive achievement. This round of 16 match with Alexander Bublik is likely to be as entertaining as it is unreliable. The 23-year-old Kazakh overcame a fightback from Denis Shapovalov on Tuesday to back-up a strong win against Marton Fucsovics on Sunday and he is always a tricky opponent when tuned-in. This first meeting between the two leaves a lot of questions to be answered but Karatsev should eventually find a way through Bublik’s raw talent to win outright.
