THE PREDICTION
This will be a really enjoyable quarter-final clash in the late tie on Friday evening but the winner is almost impossible to call with any clarity. World number 10 Matteo Berrettini and number 25 Cristian Garin share a 1-1 head-to-head record with a win apiece in 2019, Garin’s in the Munich Open final on clay and Berrettini’s at the Shanghai Masters on hard, and that is a fairly solid marker for their skill-sets in terms of who on average would win on which surface. However, Berrettini won the Serbia Open on clay last week to start a now six-match winning streak after a straight-sets victory over Federico Delbonis in the round of 16 yesterday, with the Italian the player in the better form, and yet Cristian Garin’s defeat of Daniil Medvedev yesterday was the stand-out shock of the round. Take nothing away from the Chilean’s performance against Medvedev but the Russian had been struggling for most of the match and is on his way back from contracting covid-19 at altitude here in Madrid, which could have contributed to a nosebleed in the first set.
Ultimately, though, this match could not be tighter between Berrettini’s solid form and Garin, the better clay-court player, coming off one of the best wins of his career. This is not a match for an accumulator but take this clash to see three sets and leave a winner up to chance. At a push, Berrettini looks the likelier winner.
