13th seed Elise Mertens took out the third seed Simona Halep on Tuesday evening in a big early shock at the Madrid Masters. The Belgian has been in great form this season but beating Halep on clay is always an incredible feat and she has a title to her name this year already with a win at the Gippsland Trophy before the Australian Open. Mertens is on the wrong end of a 4-2 head-to-head record with world number seven Aryna Sabalenka, though, and the Belarusian looks to be going from strength to strength this season. The 23-year-old has won the last three meetings with Mertens and is yet to drop a set this week in Madrid, with the only player on tour able to beat here since early March being world number one Ash Barty twice. Take Sabalenka to win this match outright, with a straight-sets victory a riskier possibility.
