World number 85 Pierre-Hugues Herbert came through the qualifiers strongly to reach the Madrid Masters main draw but he has not been rewarded kindly. World number 49 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is in some excellent form on clay and has reached the quarter-finals in two of his last three tournaments, including the Monte-Carlo Masters. 30-year-old Herbert will have designs on a deep run in the Men’s Doubles with partner Nicolas Mahut but the Frenchman is well capable of taking a set or even the upset here so picking Davidovich Fokina to win their first encounter outright looks the best option.
