It is something of a surprise to see 36-year-old John Isner here in Madrid as the big-serving American is not known for his clay-court prowess, especially as he nears the twilight of his illustrious career. This looks like an intriguing match-up against 21-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic, with the Serb a fine clay-court player to come but currently struggling for consistent form. If Isner’s serve is intact in his first tournament away from the North American continent this year he should be able to blast past the young Serb in straight sets. Kecmanovic still has plenty of improving to do and it would be a shock to see him cope with the world number 38’s famous firepower in this first meeting.
