THE PREDICTION
This looks set to be one of the best matches from the first round of the Madrid Masters in the third meeting this year between Jeremy Chardy and Dan Evans, with Evans winning the first two. The world number 26 beat Chardy in the semi-finals of the Murray River Open in the way to his first ATP title and then again in three sets at the Qatar Open during the peak of Chardy’s superb form so far this season. World number 51 Chardy is more than capable of taking their head-to-head record back to 2-2 but his performances have tuned down a little in recent weeks, whilst Evans is getting better. The 30-year-old has never had anything like the success of a Masters semi-final until last month’s Monte-Carlo Masters campaign, let alone on clay, but his game has found its groove on this surface. Evans leads Chardy 2-0 for 2021 and in their current form the Brit should be able to make it a hat-trick here.
