World number 54 Dominik Koepfer is a solid clay-court competitor and showed that in a strong round of 16 battle with Munich Open finalist Jan-Lennard Struff last time out, though he has struggled for consistency. The German has been steadily rising up the rankings this year and reached the semi-finals of the Mexican Open back in March to show for some improving form and this looks an intriguing first round clash with world number 45 Reilly Opelka. The 23-year-old American is on a five-match losing streak since falling to defeat in a five-set epic with Taylor Fritz at the Australian Open and he desperately needs a potentially kinder draw like this match to get a win back under his belt. Koepfer, though, will be well aware of his opponent’s current shortcomings and at 6’11” Opelka can be outmanoeuvred on this surface as well as slightly hampered on his power-serve. This is not a match for the accumulators, but take the lower-ranked German to win this second meeting between the pair having won their first encounter in straight sets at the 2019 US Open.
