World number 22 Cristian Garin won the Chile Open in his native Santiago earlier this year and can be top 10 clay-court player on his day but recently he has struggled to get over the line. He lost to world number 50 Cameron Norrie at last week’s Estoril Open having gone up a set and looked uncomfortable there as well as in a first round loss to Kei Nishikori the week previous at the Barcelona Open. That opens the door for home favourite Fernando Verdasco to roll back the years in front of a limited but loving home crowd. Garin won their first meeting at the Chengdu Open back in 2019 and in normal service should be winning this match in straight sets but his recent performances coupled with Verdasco’s home tie puts this match in the “upset” category. Take 37-year-old Verdasco to win at least one set here, or go all the way on a risky punt for the veteran.
