World number 141 Carlos Taberner came through two very impressive qualifying matches over Jordan Thompson and rising star Lorenzo Musetti to reach the main draw in Madrid and the 23-year-old will be buzzing for this high profile first round match. Taberner will garner plenty of home support from the limited spectators and world number 28 Fabio Fognini is in the right (or wrong) frame of mind to be goaded right now after his disqualification from the Barcelona Open two weeks ago against another young Spaniard. The line here should be a straight-sets win for the Italian but given all the outside factors here there is the sense of an upset that the crowd could drag over the line. Take Fognini to win outright here but, separately, it could be worth opting for Taberner to win at least a set in this one.
