- 2018 Madrid Open champion Alexander Zverev has come through a vastly impressive field of opponents to reach a second final here, beating Kei Nishikori, Dan Evans, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem all in straight sets.
- The world number six also won his 2018 title here without dropping a set in the entire campaign and the conditions here in Madrid at altitude suit the German number one’s game entirely.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
- World number 10 Matteo Berrettini has take out two eccellent clay-court players in Cristian Garin and, late on Saturday, Casper Ruud to reach his second-successive final on tour.
- The 25-year-old has four ATP titles to his name so far and made it three clay title last week with a win at the Serbia Open to enter his first ever Masters final on an eight-match winning streak.
THE PREDICTION
Italian Matteo Berrettini has spent this week in Madrid somewhat under the radar on his side of the draw but the 25-year-old powerhouse has been prolific without showing off to reach his first ever Masters final. He got close once before at the Shanghai Masters in his best year to date, 2019, but was stopped in the semi-finals by Alexander Zverev as one of his two wins over the Italian in a 2-1 head-to-head record. Berrettini has more than a shout at enacting revenge here but the quality of his opponent this week has been something to behold. 24-year-old Zverev has without question been the best player in Madrid this week and looks confident in everything he does right now. The German is a player who needs that self-belief in abundance but when he finds this form he is nigh-on impossible to stop. Zverev has been here and done it before in Madrid and Berrettini may find himself up against a player who is playing the same way just a little better at this moment in time. The risky move is Zverev in straight-sets but the German should be winning this final any which way.
