THE PREDICTION
World number four Alexander Zverev came through a monumental three-set slog against John Isner on Saturday to continue Team Europe’s dominance at the Laver Cup. The 24-year-old has lost just once on a hard court since the swing got underway and that was to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the US Open. Zverev won a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games for a first real taste of international success and he took that momentum straight into a Masters title at the Cincinnati Open. Team World’s Felix Auger-Aliassime took the lead against Matteo Berrettini on Friday before a tight defeat and he will be eager for redemption here. Auger-Aliassime is knocking on the door of the top 10 with earnest now on his current career-high ATP world ranking of 11th.
The last player to beat Zverev not called Djokovic was Felix Auger-Aliassime after the Canadian beat him in five intense sets at Wimbledon back in July. Before that Zverev had won three matches in a row without dropping a set for a 3-1 head-to-head record but 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime is fast becoming able to tackle the top players on tour more consistently. Given the one-sided scoreline heavily favouring Team Europe there is little motivation for Team World on Day 3 but FAA is certainly good enough to earn a set here. For that reason take Zverev as the outright winner.
