World number nine Karolina Pliskova clearly loves it here in Rome after fighting back from a set down against in-form Jelena Ostapenko with a smile on her face throughout. The 29-year-old Czech has made the last two finals at the Italian open, winning in 2019 and before having to withdraw from the 2020 final, so she has pedigree and motivation to make up for that disappointing defence of her biggest title win to date. Taking her on will be another player in exceptional form in Petra Martic, who expertly combatted a solid assault by Jessica Pegula on Friday morning to come through to the semi-finals in straight sets. 30-year-old Martic has only won one WTA title in her career, in Istanbul back in 2019, and that is surprising considering how ell the world number 25 is playing. However, given the mindset Pliskova has found at this event the Czech looks the likelier of these players to make it through to the final.
