World number 90 Gianluca Mager took positivity to the court in his first round match with Alex de Minaur and the Italian refused to let his opponent into the match in an impressive straight-sets victory. Mager will face fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego on the Grand Stand Arena with hopefully a larger crowds present than on a rain-tarnished Tuesday here in Rome, with this their first ever meeting. World number 33 Sonego was part of an exciting, topsy-turvy encounter with a returning Gael Monfils yesterday but his victory was no less impressive in three sets. 26-year-old Sonego is the better overall player but Mager has a history of random assaults on clay-court draws and this match looks a difficult call. Take Sonego to win at least a set here, with Mager well capable of causing an upset.
